Happy New Year to all! Today is January 3rd and the weather in our beautiful Bay Area is so nice that you would think it was springtime.
Dan went on two design appointments yesterday with two new prospective clients. It looks like homeowners are once again in the mood to begin thinking about their home remodeling goals.
Danenberg Design was just approached by www.DesignShuffle.com, who asked to feature one of our projects on their site in the near future. I have just finished setting up our profile and uploading two photo albums to their site in preparation.
We kept in touch with many of our clients at Christmas time and it was so nice to hear from a number of them. One of our many favorite clients has a second home in Puerto Vallarta, where we have been to visit them on three occasions over the last few years. They have given us an open invitation and I can feel PV calling my name as I write this. Here is a photo of us with our clients/friends at their Menlo Park home.

I’m including a photo of a project we did several years ago in Marin County. Its open and inviting style is one I really enjoy.

We look forward to all that the new year will bring and wish everyone a safe and healthy 2012.

Transitional Style Kitchen in Palo Alto
So, you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen. This is a great time to do just that!
There are many reasons why our clients remodel their kitchens. Here are just a few of them:
1) We just purchased this new home and don’t like the style of the kitchen.
2) We have lived here for many years and have been talking about a new kitchen for 15 years!
3) The last of our children has left home and we are ready for the kitchen we have dreamed about that is just for us.
4) We both love to cook and would like a more efficient kitchen with room for two cooks.
Does any one of these sound familiar? If so, you may be ready for that next step, which is to start collecting articles and photos of what your dream kitchen will look like as far as the style and colors you know that you will enjoy. That is really all you need to do before placing a call to a design / build firm such as ours to schedule an initial consultation.
Once we meet to discuss your plans and goals, our designer will direct you each step of the way. And, you can participate in the process as much or as little as you like.
Our team members pride themselves on being good listeners, with each designer’s goal being to help you to realize your remodeling goals.
You’ll be amazed at how an experienced, professional design team can simplify the home remodeling process. Here are the steps.
• The initial step is a design consultation with a designer in your home.
• Once our designer understands your goals and your style, we assist you in arriving at a preliminary overall project budget. When you are ready to move forward with us, we will make a standard Design Agreement with you and collect a design retainer.
• The next step is a return visit to your home to verify field measurements and photograph the site.
• Next, our designer develops a preliminary concept, showing graphically how we propose to solve any problems and meet your goals. Our many years of experience and depth of product knowledge better serve you by allowing us to meet the needs/wants you have expressed to us.
• Upon your approval of the design direction, we arrive at the final design solution. Once approved by you, we develop detailed AutoCAD-generated construction drawings.
• If your project includes a kitchen and/or bath remodel, we also send a complete set of AutoCAD-generated cabinet drawings to our factory, where they will use them to build your cabinets per our specifications.
• We manage all work done on site that involves our products and services. This includes determining wall-to-wall clearances, door and window openings, location of all utilities (including plumbing, electrical and HVAC), lighting locations, and finally, installation of cabinets, appliances, countertops and more.

 Bay Area Kitchen Remodel
To Our Dear Friends and Clients,
This is a season to cherish and we at Danenberg Design hope you had a wonderful Christmas and wish each of you a happy and prosperous new year! We enjoyed celebrating our Christian heritage.
Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord.
Below is a photo of a table set for a celebration. It is actually the dining area in a home where we designed the kitchen, bathrooms and beautiful walk-in closet in Belvedere, CA. After staging the kitchen and master bath, so that our photographer could take photos for our portfolio, just for fun, I staged the dining table and had him take some shots of that as well. I can just imagine family and friends gathered around this festive table for the holidays.
Dan and I can count many blessings in 2010 and trust yours were many as well. Among them, we are grateful for you, our friends and clients.
Warmest thanks to all of you for your support and referrals in 2010. Be sure to let us know how we can be of service in 2011.

New Kitchen Designs, Custom Kitchen Cabinets and Kitchen Island Designs.
A lot has happened since my last post, which showed an uber modern kitchen we had completed in Los Gatos, CA.
As many of you will remember, I exchanged posts with a topnotch kitchen designer in Long Island, NY. She featured an article on our company on her blog and we featured her company and their designs on our blog. I really enjoyed working with her and putting together our respective posts, along with numerous photos.
What happened next was totally unexpected. We were contacted by a gentleman in Southern Cal who enjoys writing blogs about other designers in the building / remodeling industry. He particularly likes modern design and was excited about some of our photos of modern kitchens.
He ended up interviewing me extensively and then putting together a wonderful post on his blog. Next thing I knew, he said that he wanted to do a second post with more information about our firm and photos of projects.
To say that Dan and I were honored is an understatement. Joe, who wrote the articles, is quite a writer. We are most thankful to him for taking the time to do this and I wanted to be sure to share his musings with our readers.
You can click on the links below to view his posts and see images of design work. We hope that you enjoy!

Aloha from Northern California! (Sorry – we lived in Honolulu for 16 years.)
Of course, our firm has done numerous modern or contemporary kitchens over the 29 years we have been renovating homes for clients. I am not sure any one of them has been as contemporary as this one that we recently completed in Los Gatos, California. It is uber modern with ultra clean lines and was designed by my husband and partner, Dan. I wanted to share some of the photos.
For photographs of other contemporary designs, visit the Danenberg Design website.
Several weeks ago, I purchased some items to stage this kitchen and then went to the clients’ home, where I met Rio Costantini, the professional photographer that photographs our projects for us. (You can see more of his work at www.riophoto.net.) While he was setting up his equipment, I was busy arranging the staging items. What I wanted to capture were the clean lines. As you can see below, I was after a minimalist look.
Normally, when we are done with a photoshoot, our team will sit down with the photographer and the clients and enjoy the food that was used for the photo shoot. In this case, the only food used was organic nectarines! Instead, Rio and I took a break to savor some Mexican food at the site before continuing the shoot.
The goal was to capture shots of the entire space, as well as a number of ‘detail’ shots and also some photos of our wonderful clients. The shoot took over three hours from start to finish.
The photos below include a couple of overall shots plus some detail shots and a photo of our clients, standing in their awesome new kitchen.

Here is what Grace Kelly, one of the owners of Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly in New York, has forwarded to me to share with our readers about East Coast kitchen trends….
In a conversation with the designers at Danenberg Design in California, we thought it would be interesting to compare regional kitchen design trends between their West Coast firm and our East Coast showroom, Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly on Long Island, New York.
Our clients in the New York metro area want their kitchens to be a central part of their socializing space. They want to maximize their usable space with good design that embraces their lifestyle. We still have many requests for open floor plans where the kitchen spills into the family room or dining space. There seems to be a renewed enjoyment of cooking, perhaps due to people’s desire for healthy food. We frequently design kitchens with two ovens, one oversized or two smaller islands, two dishwashers, two refrigerators, and a wine refrigerator. Below are some of the trends we are embracing on the East Coast at Kitchen Designs:

Style Trends:
Traditional kitchens still dominate most of the work we do at Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly’s Long Island, NY showroom. White traditional kitchens represent almost 50 percent of all kitchen sales. Clients choose from 7 different solid shades of white, 6 hanging glazes, and 4 striated glazes. We have used white in formal estate kitchens, country kitchens, and coastal kitchen designs in the Hamptons. Adding a bit of dark wood, a touch of color, or varying the shades of white gives the design a warmer, less stark feel.
Our recent modern designs are much softer and subdued. The contemporary lines are clean but not edgy or cold.

The rooms are balanced and grounded yet not minimal. Collections or heirloom pieces are showcased in a simple yet organized way.
Storage Trends:
Clients have gone back to the basics with functional in-cabinet storage. To help them get organized, we’re using pot drawers, basic roll-out pantries, cutlery dividers, vertical tray storage, pull out spice racks, and chef’s pantries.

Color Trends:
Although you’d probably expect this more on the West Coast, we have recently designed a few kitchens and baths with bold, vibrant colors – especially greens and blues.
The use of color in these designs is visually stunning, adding charisma and vitality to the room. Our clients highly value uniqueness and individuality and their personal expression is interpreted within the design by using of various finishes, textures, color, and artwork.

Countertop Trends:
Granite countertops are still the number one choice but engineered stone/quartz is growing in popularity. We also use marble, concrete, soapstone, and slate.
Lighting Trends:
All of our kitchens include a lighting design that includes several layers for task, ambient, accent, and decorative. We often add fixtures such as chandeliers, pendants, or sconces give the room unique personality and flair.
Other Trends to Embrace:
Concern for environment. Clients are looking for earth-friendly environmental solutions using renewable and recycled materials that are durable, environmentally safe, and energy-efficient.
Addition of home automation technology. Clients want rooms that are multi functional with lighting control systems.
Home office design. We are seeing a rise in demand for home office space. Many New Yorkers work from home and often want this space adjacent to the kitchen with complementary design.
Outdoor kitchens: Clients are extending their use of living space by bringing the indoors outside!

People are building much more elaborate outdoor kitchens to complement their indoor kitchen spaces. People enjoy being outside and entertaining outside.
The huge advances in the quality of outdoor products has encouraged clients to build full-fledged outdoor kitchens. We recently designed and installed a fire pit on one of our outdoor kitchen projects. We loved it so much; we added one to our own property.
Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly, Inc. is the recipient of a 2010 National NKBA Design Award Based in New York’s affluent Long Island Gold Coast, they come highly recommended by clients and industry professionals alike.

One of our clients asked if he could write a post for our blog describing his experience with the remodel done by my husband and business partner, Dan, for him and his wife. This was a kitchen and bath transformation in Emerald Hills in Redwood City.
We were very pleased to accept his offer and couldn’t wait to see what he would have to say.
Below is what he wrote.

So you need a kitchen remodeling, and in your experience, dealing with the process is worse than a root canal. While kitchen remodeling isn’t entirely simple, it needn’t be traumatic. My wife and I endured it a few years ago, and it wasn’t really so bad—so open wide.
First ask yourself this question.
Are you planning on staying in your home for more than a few years? If the answer is yes, then get the job done right and done well—the first time.
Unless you are in the building trades, and have a lot of time on your hands, forget that do-it-yourself job. That neighbor of yours who is a contractor—the one whose house is in a constant state of disrepair should be a clue to the difficulty of doing it yourself. It’s a lot less painful to hand the job off to someone else. Remember, you’re going to see every little imperfection you build into your kitchen. It’ll bug you forever.
Perhaps the best way to get a job done properly is to hire a kitchen designer first. The kitchen designer who is working for the local branch of your big hardware store might not qualify. A week of training in kitchen design (and a week of sales training) does not make a good designer.
Get an experienced designer who is not affiliated with a store or a contractor. Dan Danenberg, who did my kitchen, works with a group of contractors he trusts to get the job done right, but he is not affiliated with them. This is best. After all, do you go to a restaurant to ask the owner if his food is any good? No, you go to an independent source. A good designer may cost you more initially, but a good hands-on designer like Dan, who is willing to oversee your project, is worth his or her weight in gold. He may save you money and heartache in the future.
During my last, and might I say final kitchen remodel ever, the contractor misplaced the window in the kitchen by a few inches. If I had been in charge, I wouldn’t have known. But because Dan was constantly checking in on the job all the time, the window was moved to the right place, at the contractor’s expense, without anyone even mentioning it to the contractor. He knew he had to do the job right.
Do you want to oversee the job yourself? Probably not. You don’t just sit back and wait for results. It seems like you could, but I’ve never had any job done in my house or my yard that didn’t offer surprises, and that doesn’t mean that they discovered gold on my property, and found a box of jewelry behind one of the walls.
You want your input known, you want a hand in the design, but do you really want to sit down with the contractor to discuss with him how each cabinet should open? Do you really know what’s best for your needs? A good designer will know what to factor into your job. There will still be unforeseen complications, and delays are usually inevitable, but it’s a good thing to have an advocate on your side. An experienced designer like Dan will move your job along, tell you what you should know, and almost as important, leave you out of the loop if there are some minor hitches. You shouldn’t have to worry that the project is done right.
If you have a contractor you have worked with before, a good designer might be able to work with him. But there are specifics in kitchen (and bath) remodeling which might make it better to work with your designer’s choice of contractors. For instance, most contractors can do tile work, but are they artisans? You’ll like an artisan’s work better, I guarantee it. Do they specialize in “quickie” remodeling? If you are going to do the job but once for the foreseeable future, this contractor may not be the person best suited to building a kitchen that’s more high-end.
Here’s my rule of thumb about designers. If you are a person who usually adds on special features to your automobile—a more powerful engine or special wheels, even a sunroof– look into a designer for your project. It’s well worth the money, and you will probably break even in the long run due to their diligence. Certainly the value and satisfaction in your project is worth that upgrade.
One more caveat, does your brother-in-law have a contractor’s license? Do you like family unity? Skip using friends and family for your project. I like my family and my in-laws. I want to keep it that way.
Kitchen remodeling really doesn’t have to be awful. It’s never easy, but it can be relatively painless with a little help.
If you are located near the San Francisco Peninsula, you certainly can’t go wrong using Danenberg Design.

Dramatic ‘Before’ and ‘After’ Photos of Clients’ Home That Flooded
On July 23, I posted an article about clients who returned home from vacation to find that their home had flooded. They stepped thru the front door into the entry area only to find that they were stepping in water. I shared some of their ‘saga’ and included details about their having to live in a hotel for a number of months while our firm renovated most of their home. You can check back with the former post to discover the details.
As mentioned in the earlier post, today’s post will have some of the ‘Before’ photos, showing the damage done by the flooding. I will also include here another ‘After’ photo.
By the way, I haven’t mentioned that this is the home that one of the homeowners (the husband) grew up in. Imagine how traumatic it was for him to find his childhood home flooded and to have to pack up all of his belongings and move to a local hotel for such a long time. Here are several dramatic ‘Before’ shots of the home after it flooded, but before the renovation.
Follow the photos below from the day that Servpro arrived to deliver remediation services for the water damage to the completion of the home renovation and a photo of their new kitchen!
(News about the next post. Another client has asked to write an article about his experience with his remodel. Hopefully that will be ready in time for the next post.)

Home Renovation
Turnkey Team Approach
This week I wanted to share the story of a young couple whose home we recently renovated. Here is how their story started.
Splish, Splash. Jason and Lily had been away on vacation. They returned home late at night and when they opened their front door, and stepped inside, what they encountered seemed impossible. As they began walking, they were stepping in water! They then heard a ‘shhhhhhhh’ sound that sounded like a ruptured pipe.
Their home is on a hillside with beautiful views! Because of this, their main entry is on the upper level of the home.
They soon saw that water had not only spread throughout the second story of their home, but had leaked through the hardwood floor and the ceiling and wet the lower level. To make matters worse, on the upper level of their home, the drywall on the walls had soaked up the water and the walls were wet up to a height of about 30″ off of the floor. As they went downstairs, they saw that the ceiling was wet and sagging in areas and had fallen in other areas. The walls downstairs were all wet. Wow, imagine how their hearts sank. Their home was completely uninhabitable.
They checked into a hotel for the night. Of course their insurance company was called and scheduled a remediation company to come to their home to assess the damage. The company took their belongings to storage.
A good friend of the couple, a Realtor, told Lily and Jason about our team. Danenberg Design was hired to renovate a completely ruined home. Our contractor started with the demolition and took the walls down to the studs throughout the interior of the home and removed the floors down to the plywood subfloors. Lily and Jason would spend the next 8 months or so in a hotel as their home was rebuilt.
Here are a couple of photos of their brand new kitchen. One photo is of Lily and me in her beautiful kitchen. My next post will have photos of the ‘before’ (so that you can see the devastation brought about by the water leak) and more ‘after’ photos.
Meanwhile, one of our other projects was just featured on the CalFinder website. Below is the link, so that you can take a look. Danenberg Design: Kitchen and Bath Extraordinaires http://bit.ly/bZUSdv

Kitchen / Bath Design – Complete Home Renovation – Turnkey Team Approach
This is just a brief post to wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July. The weather here in Northern California has been amazing lately. Just perfect for a 4th of July BBQ and celebration. We have so much to be thankful for.
And don’t forget that this is the ideal time of year to begin a home remodeling project. Why? The nice weather is a big reason. During the wet season of the year it is difficult to do remodeling work that involves ‘opening the envelope’ of the home. Replacing windows or doors or adding or changing skylights becomes difficult. Not to mention the mud and other items tracked into the home as the construction workers enter and leave. Although our firm always sets up a temporary kitchen when the renovation includes designing and building out a new kitchen, a backyard barbeque will be another handy way to avoid eating out so much of the time.
Then there is the fact that most remodeling projects begun in July will be finished before the holiday season begins and you will have that beautiful ‘new’ home in which to entertain family and friends.
Speaking of family and friends, we hope you are taking some time to enjoy their company as we celebrate this special occasion.
Have a ‘sparkling’ Fourth!
